Charity Knits

The guild's ongoing charity projects include creating special scarves and shawls for The AAMC Breast Center in the Sajak Pavilion at Anne Arundel Medical Center. We also make baby hats and knitted knockers for the hospital.

The guild provides members with yarn chosen carefully to meet the needs of each charity project.

Guidelines:

1. Scarves should be approximately 54"-60" long and at least 6" wide so they can be tied around the neck.

2. In addition to being warm during Chemo treatment & covering ports, these scarves draw the eye up to the neck and face. When you are planning your scarf, think of a beautiful scarf to wear around your neck when meeting friends for lunch at a restaurant.  The scarves are not for outerwear on a coat, jacket or sweater; they are intended for wearing indoors.

3. At the SOS ladies request, no cowls or infinity scarves, please.

4. Scarves are for ladies only.

5. The color should be a happy and cheerful shade or a tasteful combination of colors.  Pastels work well. Please, no gray, brown, black, tan, or greige and no florescent colors or novelty patterned yarn (such as red & green, orange & black, or camo colors).

6. Yarn should be soft, drape well, and not be scratchy.

7. Scarves should be crafted in fingering to light worsted weight yarn.

8. Please use natural fiber yarn or yarn that is an acrylic blend with natural fibers. If acrylic yarn is used, please make sure it is soft and drapes well.

9. Scarves with “bling-bling,” buttons, straps, fringe, snaps, pom- poms, tassels, etc., will not be used.

10. Free scarf patterns suitable for knitters and crocheters are posted on Ravelry under the South River Knitting Guild’s page.

Requirement:

The scarf you make will be a beautiful gift, a bright spot during a difficult time.  Many survivors keep and treasure these scarves for years.  The message of love and hope sent by a scarf is very strong. Patients are touched and sometimes overwhelmed by the love, time and resources you, the handcrafter, pour into creating a scarf for someone you don’t know.

Knit Hat Instructions

Materials:

  • Soft acrylic four-ply yarn or fine baby yarn doubled in baby colors

    • Examples: Caron Simply Soft, Red Heart Baby Soft, KnitPicks Brava Worsted

  • US size 10 needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)

    • Tip: If US size 10 needles are uncomfortable to work with, try using US size 8 and casting on 48 stitches instead. This will result in the same size hat with 12 stitches to draw the tail through instead of 11.

Gauge:

Gauge should be approximately 4.5 stitches per inch and 6 rows per inch

Instructions (knit flat):

  • Cast on 44 stitches

  • Knit 2, purl 2 rib until work is 7 inches

  • On next row, knit 2 together, then purl together to end of row (22 stitches remain)

  • On next row, knit 2 together to end of row (11 stitches remain)

  • Do not cast off, but thread needle and draw through stitches

  • Pull drawn stitches up tight and fasten off

  • Sew seam from bottom up to top to prevent the hat from unraveling. Fold up brim.

No tassels or pompoms please. Hats should measure approximately 10 inches in circumference by 7.5 inches long.

To eliminate having a seam, which may irritate baby's head, try using circular/double pointed needles. Visual demonstrations of this technique are available via online videos.

Instructions (knit in the round):

  • Cast on 44 stitches and join in the round

  • Knit 2, purl 2 rib until work is 7 inches

  • On next round, knit 2 together, then purl 2 together to end of round (22 stitches remain)

  • On next round, knit 2 together to end of round (11 stitches remain)

  • Break yarn with a tail, thread needle, and draw the tail through the stitches

  • Pull drawn stitches up tight and weave in the end. Fold up brim.
